![]() I have just finished this book (its a light read so don't feel intimidated!) and loved it! each story or legend is illustrated by one of Ian's beautiful paintings which have almost a quality of Silk Painting to them. Ian's style is a combination of watercolour, screen print and Indian Ink - if you particularly fancy purchasing an item of his work they are available from http://www.mashamgallery.co.uk/ The book is a light hearted stroll through the fables, tales and legends of the Yorkshire dales - with everything from Ghosts to Saints covered. The book is also useful for the tourist as mentions many interesting views, churches, villages and natural phenomenon which would be a good basis for planning a Dales Holiday or simply an enjoyable read! All in all an excellent canter through the Dales and just wish Ian would bring out a range of Postcards! 12oz Whole Shrimps 8oz cod or haddock fillets 2 anchovy fillets 1 teaspoon anchovy essence 3-4 oz clarified butter for sealing Good pinch of cayenne pepper Good pinch ground mace Pinch of Salt 5oz of butter softened If using fresh shrimps, boil for 2 to 3 minutes and allow to cool. Shell the shrimps, cut up the flesh roughly and set aside. Wash the shells, put in a pan, just cover with water and boil for 20 minutes. strain off the liquid and use to simmer the cod of haddock fillets until cooked. Remove the fish from the pan and boil the liquid hard to reduce it to about 2 tablespoons. Put the fish, the reduced liquid and all the other ingredients, except the shrimps, into a food processor and blend to a smooth paste. Transfer to a bowl and work in the chopped shrimps. Pack the mixture into small posts and cover and seal with clarified butter. Store in a cool place. To make clarified butter, put the butter into a pan, bring to the boil and remove from the heat. The clear butter liquid will come to the top. Pour off very gently, as required, leaving the sediment in the bottom of the pan. ![]() A good friend of mine is a fan of everything Masham (a village local to my native Harrogate) put me onto this author as primarily an artist who has branched out into illustrated books. The Penhill Giant is Ian Scott Massie's first foray into Children's literature and we feel with his heartwarming interpretation of the old Yorkshire dales story as well as the relevant and detailed illustrations bring the story to life. The story I would say is suitable for the 7's and under and would be good for either a parent reading to a small child or as a starter reader for an older child. The story is set in Sunny Wensleydale here cows seem to go missing periodically and sightings of a giant are terrifying the natives! One day a small girl is caught in the rain and the Giant takes her in - leading to cups of tea, meetings with the locals and the solution of what really happened to the cows! There are also strong themes of waggy dogs, cheese, cake and the importance of good manners. ISBN 978-1-909260-05-4 and they can be ordered direct from the Masham Gallery http://www.mashamgallery.co.uk/masham-gallery-press.html Our journey around the grape-cultivating globe continues. Or for more info take a look at http://www.jakeanthony.co.uk/ The organisers of the successful Harrogate Christmas Market are delighted to announce that it will return for a third year in 2014 in the same attractive location, St Mary’s Walk at the bottom of Montpellier Hill.
After being given permission by Harrogate Borough Council to go ahead again, Harrogate Christmas Market will take place from Thursday, November 27 to Sunday, November 30. The Market will be even bigger and better, with a larger Craft & Gift Marquee and wider gangways to accommodate the large crowds, as well as a redesigned layout to improve the overall visitor experience. Brian Dunsby, who, alongside his wife, Beryl, has led the Organising Committee since the event began in 2012, said he was pleased the Council’s Licensing Committee had shown unanimous support for the Christmas Market. He said: “The 2013 Christmas Market brought around 40,000 people into Harrogate, including local people and visitors from around the country. Having such an influx of shoppers just a few weeks before Christmas is a real boost to our shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels at a vital time of year. We had many messages of support from them following last year’s Market and several said it was their busiest weekend of the year.” “It is great to be able to put the Christmas Market on again in 2014, not just as an attraction for local people and visitors, but to give our support to the many businesses and organizations which benefit from it too.” As Harrogate Christmas Market continues to expand, a new organisation structure has been introduced with specialists in charge of aspects such as health and safety, logistics, trader selection and marketing. However, all these organisers are still volunteers and the event will continue to be run on a not-for-profit basis, with any surplus being donated to local good causes including the annual Christmas lights appeal. Steve Scarre, who is taking charge of logistics, said: “Brian and Beryl have done an incredible job in establishing and growing Harrogate Christmas Market in just two short years. “Its reputation is amazing – there were enquiries coming in from people wanting to book stalls for 2014 the day after the 2013 Market closed. However, the way the event has grown means it now involves a significant amount of work to secure bookings, get everything set up and keep things running smoothly throughout the four days. The full support of the Borough Council and County Council is vital. “The new organisation structure will help to ensure Harrogate Christmas Market is even more successful in 2014 and beyond.” Bookings are now being taken from local businesses which want a stall at Harrogate Christmas Market this year. The focus is on high quality Yorkshire products, including food and drink, crafts, gifts, decorations and other items not normally found on the High Street.
