Here are just some of the ways in which we are trying to protect out planet from further damage.
- Replacing our light bulbs with energy-saving bulbs. Each bedroom has approximately 10 light bulbs. Therefore, this makes a considerable difference.
- Replacing our appliances with new, energy-saving versions.
- Our dishwasher is A-Rated. This appliance runs three times a day on average, so this amounts to a considerable reduction in energy usage.
- Our washing machine is cold-fill only, cutting down on energy used.
- All our windows have been replaced with A-rated double-glazed sliding sash equivalents. This retains the character of our building while achieving considerable energy savings.
- Televisions in the rooms are gradually being replaced by energy-efficient flatscreen models. We are also ensuring that televisions are turned off when not in use. Your help with the latter would be appreciated.
- Locally sourced produce is used wherever possible in order to reduce the associated transport costs. One example is our meat, which is sourced from a local butcher who purchases his meat exclusively from local farms. We also work with our local Trade Associations to help promote shopping locally.
- We only use Yorkshire Tea. This tea is locally produced by Taylors of Harrogate who are dedicated to saving the rainforest. Money from the sale of all tea bags used in our hotel goes directly to this. We also collect coupons from the breakfast tea which help the charity further. You can find out more about the charity here: www.rainforest-alliance.org and here: http://www.yorkshirerainforestproject.co.uk/en/default.aspx
- Our coffee is sourced exclusively from B-Corp suppliers who support coffee growers in various countries, including Columbia. Our suppliers include Volcano Coffee Works. To find out more about Volcano, check out our blog here. All our coffee suppliers are dedicated to maximising taste alongside supporting the environment and the people who are involved in the production chain.
- We Installed double the required depth of insulation in the roof space when we had the roof replaced in 2012. Thsi will help to avoid energy loss through the roof space.
- Our business cards are created from 100% recycled paper whilst our black rubbish bags are also recycled and the bin bags in all our rooms are biodegradable. We use a trade recycling service which ensures that any waste which can be recycled is collected and processed, thus reducing our impact on the environment.
- In-room refrigerators are all energy-efficient models, and they are turned off when not in use.
- We have had an article written about our environmental credential in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and you can read that here.
- We try to use environmentally friendly cleaning products wherever possible.
