In the tradition of Harrogate and Agatha Christie this bright offer from Benedict Brown takes us back to the Golden Era of Crime the 1920's with this classic detective who done it? - it is avaliable in paperback, audio and kindle. The Story starts with the murder of 1 lady and pulls Lord Edgington a former police officer and his grandson into the fray determined to ferret out the murderer. Will admit its a little slow to get going compared to other similar stories - but more than makes up for it with cunning plot twists and small side adventures. All in all a pleasant read.
For the uninitiated Yorkshire has been the inpiration for many Murder Mystries over the years and this new book ( on audio, paperback and kindle) joins it fellows for a cosy murder based in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the book is set within a stones throw of Harrogate with the main detective Inspector Frank Grasby being dragged from his assignement in York to a sleepy Yorkshire Village - or is it? spies, murder, crime - all in the style of the Golden age of crime set just after the 2nd World War.
To start 2024 I thought that a Murder Mystry at a New Years Eve Party would be just the thing. Benedict Brown and his Detective Marius Quin are new to me though its reminicant of Agatha Christie and her fellow Golden Age of Crime Writers. To sum up Marius meets as if by chance his old Girlfriend Lady Isabella Montague and is invited to an exclusive New Years Eve party. There are film stars, background of financial impropriety and so the plot thickens. I followed the Audio book as its handy when you are making beds and was very well done. So a recommened read for those who are looking for a book in the cosy crime genre.
AN AUDIENCE WITH LUCY WORSLEY ON AGATHA CHRISTIERoyal Hall - Monday 5th February
Following a sell-out tour in 2022, the Queen of History, Lucy Worsley, is heading back out on the road to share stories from the fascinating life of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie.
For these unique, live illustrated talks, Lucy will present one most elusive and enigmatic figures of the twentieth century. Why did Agatha Christie spend her career pretending that she was ‘just’ an ordinary housewife, when she clearly wasn’t? Agatha went surfing in Hawaii, she loved fast cars, and she was intrigued by the new science of psychology, which helped her through devastating mental illness. So why – despite all the evidence to the contrary – did she present herself as a retiring Edwardian lady of leisure?
Sharing her research based on the writer’s personal letters and papers, Lucy will uncover the real Agatha Christie – the story of a person who, despite the obstacles of class and gender, became an astonishingly successful working woman.
This promises to be an entertaining and enlightening evening, emphasising not just Agatha’s unique gifts as a storyteller but her revolutionary qualities as a determined, successful, and thoroughly modern woman.
Lucy is Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces and a hugely popular writer, broadcaster and speaker. Her recent TV series include Blitz Spirit with Lucy Worsley (BBC One) and Lucy Worsley Investigates (BBC Two). Lucy has an OBE for services to history, and her series Suffragettes with Lucy Worsley won the BAFTA.
