Access Statement
Introduction
The Camberley is centrally located in the town of Harrogate and offers 11 guest bedrooms each with its own ensuite.
Our home is over 100 years old and although we do our best to accommodate all our guests' needs we would make you aware that there are some period features that may make access for people with limited mobility more difficult. However we do have two ground floor rooms one of which has an extra large shower enclosure with grab rails simply book them specifically.
Our property is located approximately 3 meters from the road at the front should you be arriving by taxi. However should you be arriving by car we recommend that you park in our car park at the rear. We do however recommend that you let us know that you require priority parking as we can then do our best to reserve a space for you.
Pre-Arrival
We are approximately 10 minutes walk on foot or 5 minutes in a taxi from Harrogate Train Station and Bus Stations and there is a taxi rank immediately outside the stations for your convenience. If you require a specialised taxi please call us and we will be happy to supply you with several companies with appropriate vehicles. We mainly use Blueline as we find them very reliable and professional - 01423 530830.
The streets surrounding us are all level tarmac however the section between Commerical Street and Strawberry Dale Avenue the slope is quite steep so be careful if the weather is bad.
We are also happy to have equipment delivered from Shop Mobility for example scooters. We are approximately 10 mins walk from the Shopmobility office which is located on level 10 of the Victoria Multi-Story car park so if you have come in a car you could easily park in the car park next to the office and retrieve a scooter. Their phone number is 01423 556778.
We are happy to provide large print copies of any of our information simply let us know.
Car Parking and Arrival
We have 10 parking spaces to the rear of the property with the one closest to the back door being approximately 4 meters in distance, the furthest space is approximately 10 meters away. However if you require priority parking, please let us know. The majority of the car park is gravel with the area around the back door being block paved this is all one one level till you reach 1 meter from the back door where there is a step 3 inches in height followed by another step of the same height. (There is a photograph below).
In the car park we have two sets of flood lights, as well as motion activated lighting by the back door. The majority of the lighting is activated by light levels and comes on automatically.
We have a drop off point at the front though there is a kerb and there are three steps by the front access and unfortunately there is no ramped access. On of the ground floor rooms has private access and only a small step which has allowed us to take wheelchair users in this room though it would be necessary for the wheelchair user to have some assistance in and out of the room, therefore we cannot and do not classify this room as fully disabled accessible. The width of the front door is 96cm and the width of the back door is 82cm.
We are also happy to help with luggage.
Welcome Area
Once you are inside the building the whole ground floor is on one level, we also have several chairs and sofa's avaliable for your convenience in this area. The floor in this area and throughout the whole premises is carpet with a short pile. We provide focused lighting from 3 lamps and the overhead lights have 3 bulbs in one chandelier and 5 in the other. This room also has a large bay window which provides a lot of natural light during the day.
Should you wish to have a tour of the property or for us to provide you with a virtual tour prior to arrival please let us know.
Bedrooms
We have two ground floor rooms one with a king size bed and a walk in shower and 1 with a zip and link king size bed and a sofa bed, this room also has an extra large shower cubicle with grab rails. All our rooms are marked with raised numbers on the doors for the ease of the visually impaired.
In room 12 which is the room with the standard King size bed the height of the bed is 69cm. Room 11 which has a King size bed and separate single sofa bed the height of the King bed is 62cm and the sofa bed is 36cm high. Both rooms have central lighting as well as bedside lights, we are also happy to provide extra lighting as required. Both rooms have dark coloured carpets in contrast to the walls which in 11 are a cream colour and in 12 are a dark red. We are happy to provide non allergenic bedding should you require it though we would ask that you inform us prior to arrival.
We have also purchased a vibrating alarm clock for the convenience of our guests with hearing imparements simply request it prior to arrival or on check in.
Bathrooms
Both room 11 and 12 have level access to the en-suite bathroom. The door way from room 11 to its bathroom is 84cm wide and the door from room 12 bedroom to its bathroom is 68cm. The separate entrance to room 11 has a width of 84cm and a small step of 10cm. Both showers have a small step in but are not over a bath, the toilet is 42cm high and the clearance under the sink is 64cm.
We would also point out that the shower in room 11 is extra large and is fitted with grab rails. We also provide a shower seat in this bathroom for those customers who find it easier to shower while seated. Both bathrooms have central lighting though only room 11 has natural light as well. Both bathrooms are tiled with white tiles though there is a contrasting boarder. The floor surface in both bathrooms is non-slip lino. I would mention however the taps in room 12 are a lever mixer tap but the ones in room 11 are standard ones. We may change the taps in room 11 as part of our renovation program to mixer taps if so we will update the access statement at that time.
We are happy to provide photographs should this be helpful.
Public areas - Halls, Stairs, Landing and Corridors
We are located in a 4 story Victorian terraced house with 17 steps up to the first floor. We have lighting on each landing though much of it is energy saving bulbs, we are able to provide extra lights if this is helpful with LED bulbs if necessary.
The floors are all carpeted in a short pile carpet there is a hand rail on the right hand side.
Public Areas and Lounge
When you arrive if you come from the car park you will come through the back door into our lounge and reception area. Once you are inside the reception and lounge are all on one level which is the same level as our ground floor bedrooms. There is a variety of furniture including wing back chairs, comfortable sofas and chairs with arms. There is a vast amount of natural light which comes through the large bay windows as well as 5 lamps and 2 5 branch chandeliers. The floor surfact is carpet with a short pile. We have invested in a Hearing Loop for reception just let us know if you require it activating.
Public Toilet
Our public toilet is located on the first floor with 16 steps to it. However where possible I would recommend using the bathroom in one of the ground floor bedrooms should mobility be an issue as this would be easier.
Dining Room
There are 12 steps down to our cosy basement dining room however for guests with more limited mobility we are happy to serve breakfast in the lounge which is on the ground floor and one one level with the ground floor bedrooms. The chairs do not generally have arms but we can easily supply them if required. As the breakfast room is in the basement there is little natural light but we have 20 ceiling bulbs and can provide extra lamps if required. The floor surface if a short pile carpet. Should anyone have any special dietry requirements we are happy to purchase in the required food. We use Heinz beans as they are gluten free and we cook all parts of the breakfast to order and separately for any non meat diets. The buffet is self-service but we are happy to bring our guests anything they require. The full cooked breakfast is cooked to your requirements and brought to your table. Our crockery is white and our table cloths are dark blue creating a clear colour contrast. The nearest WC which is not in a bedroom is on the first floor however should you have a mobility restriction we would serve you on the ground floor and therefore the nearest WC would be in your room.
Garden
Customers are welcome to use the garden at the front which has a paved area which has garden furniture when the weather is good, it is all one level from the street to the front door.
Additional Information
We are happy to help should there be an evacuation situation (ie fire alarm activating). We are also happy to provide any of our information in large print. Should you need to bring with you a service animal we would recommend you book room 11 directly with us as it has a private entrance which would be more convenient for letting your dog out for comfort breaks. We do use energy saving bulbs for environmental reasons but have a selection of regular bulbs should you prefer.
Our nearest shop mobility scheme operates out of the Victoria Shopping Center car park. They have an office which can be parked by for your convenience. The phone number is 01423 556778 and the full address is Harrogate Shop Mobility, Level 10, Victoria Multi-Story Car Park, East Parade, Harrogate, HG1 5LQ. We are happy to have mobility scooters left in reception to charge.
Our nearest hospital is Harrogate General which is about 8 minutes drive away and the nearest doctors is Dr Moss and partners which is about 200 meters away phone number 01423 560261.
Internet access is avaliable throughout and it is free.
There are various places to eat in Harrogate with the nearest being Brio's restaurant which is Italian http://kingsroad.brios.co.uk/File/default.asp and fully accessible for the disabled. Should you wish we are also happy to have food delivered and can help you with menu's where this will be useful. There is also BED restaurant close by but wheelchair access inside is limited but if the weather is nice it is pleasant to sit outside http://www.bed.ltd.uk . The restaurant of Ascot House Hotel and the Kimberley are close by and have parking and are wheelchair accessible.
Future Plans
We are slowly renovating our bathrooms so that they have lever taps for ease of use, if this is a requirement let us know so we can make sure you are in a suitable room. We are also hoping to put in a permanent ramp to room 11.
