This rarely performed piece will be conducted by James Hendry. Soloists include National G&S Opera Company stars Sylvia Clarke and Bruce Graham supported by the Leeds Philharmonic Chorus and members of local choral societies, accompanied by the Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra.
The Golden Legend is a cantata by Arthur Sullivan with libretto by Joseph Bennett, based on the 1851 poem of the same name by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The piece premiered at the triennial Leeds Music Festival in 1886. Scenes following the premiere transcended any known before, with the audience on its feet waving programmes and hats, climbing on chairs and hurling flowers. During Sullivan’s lifetime it was widely considered his greatest and most successful work of serious music. Said Queen Victoria after a performance at the royal Albert Hall in 1988, "At last I have heard the Golden Legend, Sir Arthur...You ought to write a grand opera - you would do it so well"... This will be an outstanding evening in an exceptional venue. Man of the Moment MILOŠ comes to Harrogate! This July, Harrogate International Festivals is delighted to bring classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglic to the Royal Hall. Milos happens to be building a reputation as the classical guitar world’s new pin-up boy, but that’s not to say he isn’t one of the most talented classical guitarists of our times, having topped the UK classical charts with his first commercial solo album Milos, The Guitar.
“…probably the biggest classical-guitar phenomenon since John William…” The Sunday Times Miloš musical career started when he discovered an ancient and dusty guitar with broken strings on top of a cupboard in his parents’ bedroom. Inexplicably, this sorry wreck of an instrument convinced him that he must become a guitarist. His progress was blindingly swift. By the age of 9 he was giving public performances, and at 16 he moved to London from his home in Montenegro to study at the Royal Academy of Music. "More extraordinary by far... was the way a single guitarist, playing an intimate and understated set, and equipped with a single microphone and some clever lighting, could shrink the Hall's cavernous space into something so close." The Guardian Set in the intimate surroundings of Harrogate’s Royal Hall and with a programme that spans mainstays of the classical guitar repertoire including De Falla and Granados, as well as arrangements of J.S Bach, to pop classics such as Girl from Ipanema; this intimate concert is bound to leave you wanting more. Buy Tickets from - http://harrogateinternationalfestivals.com/ SULLIVAN CONCERT St Peter's Church, Harrogate Friday 14th August, 7.30 pm Tickets: £20 Following last year’s resounding success, talented young musician James Hendry will conduct the Sullivan concert in St Peter’s Church for us once again.
