6oz butter - softened
6oz caster sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
5fl oz milk
Set Oven to 325F or Mark 3. Grease baking sheets. Beat together the butter and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. sift in the flour and baking powder and fold in. Mix to a stiff dough with sufficient of the milk. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and roll out to no more than 1/8th inch thick. Cut into 2 inch rounds with a cutter. Arrange the biscuits on the baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes until golden. Makes abotu 36 biscuits.

2 teaspoons mixed spice
4oz chopped mixed peel
Set oven to 350F or Mark 4. Grease and line a 9 or 10 inch cake tin. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy. Beat the eggs in a bowl set over a pan of hot water until creamy and whisk in the creamed butter/sugar mixture. Sift together the flour, baking powder and mixed spice and fold into the mixture in the bowl. Stir in the dried fruit, mixed peel and lemon rind and juice and mix to a soft consistency. Put into the tin, make a depression in the center and bake for about 2 hours or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Leave in the tin to cool and turn out onto a wire wrack.

12oz Sweet Shortcrust Pastry
For the filling :-
6oz Mixed Dried Fruit
2oz Grated Apple
Grated rind and juice 1/2 lemon
3oz golden syrup
1 1/2oz fresh brown breadcrumbs
Set oven to 425F or Mark 7 - Butter an 8 inch pie plate. roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use half to line the pie plate. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and spread the mixture over the pastry base. Cover with the remaining pastry and damp and seal the edge. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes then reduce oven to 350F or Mark 4 and bake for about a further 30 minutes until golden. Leave on the plate to cool.
The Countryside comes to Town again as Skipton holds its annual Sheep Day event on Skipton High Street on Sunday, 5th July – and this year, there are more stalls, more demonstrations, more entertainment – and plenty of sheep.
The world renowned Sheep Show returns once again – a hilarious, educational show about sheep and the history of the wool trade, featuring plenty of real sheep and shearing demonstrations.
We have spinning and weaving demonstrations this year plus drystone walling with Chris Swales.
The Young Farmers Association will be there with a display of vintage and modern tractors plus the chance for younger visitors to learn about milking cows with ‘Daisy Duke’. Corio Raptor will be on hand to educate and entertain about birds of prey...from the hawk to the owl - they know their stuff!
There will be live music and entertainment for most of the day including Skipton Brass Band, Carleton Stompers Troop and Furness Morris Dancers.
Another great attraction coming back to Sheep Day this year is our MINI ZOO - we will have rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks, chickens, pygmy goats, lambs, calves, piglets, alpaca, mini donkeys and mini ponys on hand for you to pet and get more 'hands on' with feeding and being educated about these amazing animals.
A children’s fairground ride area will be present – and the regular monthly Farmer’s Market will be moving to the High Street for the day, instead of their usual spot on the canal basin.
NEW to this year we have the RED WYVERNS who usually entertain crowds at Skipton Castle, but this year will be on the High Street to guide you through a bit of Skipton's past...make sure you don't miss that! They will show you how to arm a knight and even train you in their knight school - then...well, lots of fighting and clashing swords.
This year we also have our giant Swaledale sheep puppets on show with Sammie the Sheep dog so say hi if you see them wandering around town.
Also wandering through town will be 'Farmer Giles' peering over his fence and having a good old chin-wag with passers by and the Beck-To-Beck magicians who will entertain you whilst you are walking around looking at the great stalls and sideshows.
The event is organised by Skipton Town Council, supported by funding from the Skipton Business Improvement District.
Sheep Day starts at 10am and runs through until around 4pm. The event takes place on Skipton High Street, which will be closed to traffic from early on Sunday morning until the end of the event.

2 level teaspoons baking powder
2 level teaspoons ground ginger
1 level teaspoon ground cinnamon
8oz medium oatmeal
6oz black treacle
4oz hard margarine
6oz soft brown sugar
1 egg beaten
1/4 pint milk
Set oven to 350F or Mark 4. Grease and line a 9 inch square cake tin or equivalent. Sieve the flour, baking powder, ginger, and cinnamon into a bowl and stir in the oatmeal. Put the treacle, margarine and sugar into a pan over a low heat and stir occasionally until the margarine has melted. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and gradually stir in the treacle mixture and then the egg and milk. Beat well until smooth. Pour into the tin and bake for about 1 hour until golden. Cool slightly in the tin and turn out onto a wire rack. Store in an airtight tin.
