This is the first in the series of adventures of the Honourable Daisy Dalrymple who is a young lady making her own living in the 1920's as a magazine reporter. Daisy is doing a series of articles on the stately homes of the UK and as the series goes on with adventures in each location (think murder she wrote). In this first book we meet the full cast of recurring characters such as Philip Petrie child hood friend with notions of saving her from herself, her housemate Lucy and most importantly Alec Fletcher the detective inspector and later Daisy's love interest. Our story starts with a nasty bit of work Lord Stephen Astwick is found dead floating in the iced over lake - is it murder? is it a tragic accident? and what is going on with the missing jewellery in the houses of the rich and landed all over the countryside? Alex is called in to investigate as he is in the area for the robberies stretching his diplomacy to the limit as well as his detecting skills.
