Our story starts in Egypt with the meeting of Sophia Leonides and Charles Hayward (a young English diplomat and son of the Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard) he expresses his wish to marry her as soon as his war work is tied up and he is back in England. Time goes on the war ends and Charles returns to England - straight away he calls for Sophia but finds she is in the middle of a family crisis. Her Grandfather has been poisoned and the whole family is under suspician - But who did do it? Nearly everyone has a motive, there was a will but then there is a 2nd will - but who new the changed terms? Was it the Tutor Laurence Brown suspected of having and affair with the much younger wife of the deceased Brenda Leonides? Was it the eldest son Roger who was struggling in business or his devoted wife who would do anything to protect him and was planning for them to leave for Jamaca? Is it the antisocial Eustace resenting his grandfather for keeping him at home? Magda the constant dramatic actress or her resentful husband Philip- always the overlooked younger son. Or was it the Aunt Edith? growing in resentment bringing up her sisters children while possibly being in love with her brother in law? Or Sophia herself using Charles as a blind? or last but not least the child Josephine who is described by her own mother as a changeling and resents being held back from school and ballet. This wide cast of characters all live together in the one sprawling house - all with opportunity as well as motive - access to the poison was easy for all and the victim had even joked about it as a method of poison. Agatha leads you through the twists and turns of the characters leading you first to one and then the next each as possible as the last.
