Yorkshire’s landscape is steeped in centuries of history, and few places capture this heritage better than its castles and abbeys. For lovers of history, architecture, and dramatic scenery, Bolton Abbey, Bolton Castle, and Skipton Castle offer a rich and immersive glimpse into England’s medieval past and Harrogate makes the perfect base for exploring these historic landmarks. When you stay at The Camberley, The Lodge, or Camberley Cottages, you are assured of a warm welcome, a great breakfast and comfortable rooms, all en-suite, with one boasting a fabulous copper slipper bath. Perfect for a relaxing soak before heading out to one of the nearby delightful restaurants and bars.
Bolton Abbey – Tranquillity with a Sacred Past Located just under an hour from Harrogate, near Skipton, Bolton Abbey is not only a feast for the eyes but also a journey through centuries of religious and cultural history. Set in the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales beside the River Wharfe, the abbey ruins date back to the 12th century when Augustinian monks first settled here. Although the abbey was partially destroyed during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries, much of its structure remains remarkably intact. Visitors can stroll through the romantic remains of the priory, walk across the famous stepping stones, and explore over 80 miles of footpaths through woodlands, moorlands, and riverside trails. For history enthusiasts, Bolton Abbey is a tranquil window into monastic life in medieval England. There is also an excellent tea room located near the large grassy parking area, the whole of which fronts onto the river, offering delightful views. If you take the route through the woods to The Strid, you will see an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna as you follow the route of the river. The Strid itself is an extremely narrow channel through which the entire river pours at dizzying speed. Although it looks as though you could jump it, it’s incredibly dangerous to do so and there have been many lives lost through trying. It’s a stunning thing to witness, but definitely from a safe distance, particularly if the rocks are slippery. Bolton Castle – A Fortified Jewel in Wensleydale Travel north of Harrogate to the rolling hills of Wensleydale and you’ll find the formidable Bolton Castle near Leyburn. Built in the late 14th century by Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor to Richard II, this remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress offers an authentic glimpse into the lives of England’s nobility during times of both peace and siege. What makes Bolton Castle truly unique is its level of preservation — many of its original rooms are still intact and accessible. You can explore the dungeons, climb the towers, and even stand in the room where Mary, Queen of Scots, was once imprisoned. The castle’s beautiful gardens, falconry displays, and costumed guides add to the immersive experience, making it a captivating destination for anyone passionate about British history. Leyburn itself is a charming town and well worth a visit with plenty of lovely independent shops and places to eat and a lovely friendly atmosphere. Skipton Castle – The Best-Preserved Medieval Castle in England Just a short drive from Harrogate lies Skipton Castle, one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval castles in the country. Over 900 years old, this imposing fortress was originally built in 1090 by a Norman baron and has withstood centuries of conflict — including a three-year siege during the English Civil War. Visitors can explore nearly every part of the castle, from its mighty gatehouse and banqueting hall to the chapel and medieval kitchen. The yew tree in the central courtyard, planted in 1659, adds to the castle’s charm and longevity. With informative exhibits and self-guided tours, Skipton Castle is a must-see for any history buff eager to witness the layers of England’s tumultuous past. Skipton itself is a charming town with a market. For those who love crafts as well as history, there is a wonderful knitting and fibre show, Yarndale, which takes place at the Skipton Auction Mart, on the outskirts of the town. In 2025, Yarndale is taking place on 27 and 28 September and is well worth a visit. You can purchase tickets for either day, here. Wherever you choose to visit, Harrogate makes the ideal place to stay, offering the perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort. Famous for its Victorian architecture, Turkish baths, and elegant tea rooms, it’s a destination in its own right. The Camberley, The Lodge and Camberley Cottages all provide a welcoming, peaceful base after a day of castle exploration. All of the castles are easily reached within an hour’s scenic drive. Whether you're marvelling at the ruins of a medieval abbey, wandering through the halls where monarchs once walked, or enjoying a slice of Yorkshire cake in a Harrogate tea room, this region invites you to step into the past — without sacrificing any modern comforts. So, pack your walking boots and camera, and let The Camberley, The Lodge or Camberley Cottages be your gateway to Yorkshire’s legendary castles. If you book direct, you can choose your ideal room. Our story starts in Egypt with the meeting of Sophia Leonides and Charles Hayward (a young English diplomat and son of the Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard) he expresses his wish to marry her as soon as his war work is tied up and he is back in England. Time goes on the war ends and Charles returns to England - straight away he calls for Sophia but finds she is in the middle of a family crisis. Her Grandfather has been poisoned and the whole family is under suspician - But who did do it? Nearly everyone has a motive, there was a will but then there is a 2nd will - but who new the changed terms? Was it the Tutor Laurence Brown suspected of having and affair with the much younger wife of the deceased Brenda Leonides? Was it the eldest son Roger who was struggling in business or his devoted wife who would do anything to protect him and was planning for them to leave for Jamaca? Is it the antisocial Eustace resenting his grandfather for keeping him at home? Magda the constant dramatic actress or her resentful husband Philip- always the overlooked younger son. Or was it the Aunt Edith? growing in resentment bringing up her sisters children while possibly being in love with her brother in law? Or Sophia herself using Charles as a blind? or last but not least the child Josephine who is described by her own mother as a changeling and resents being held back from school and ballet. This wide cast of characters all live together in the one sprawling house - all with opportunity as well as motive - access to the poison was easy for all and the victim had even joked about it as a method of poison. Agatha leads you through the twists and turns of the characters leading you first to one and then the next each as possible as the last. At The Camberley, we believe it’s the little things that turn a good stay into a great one. Freshly made beds, locally sourced breakfasts, a warm welcome – and, of course, the perfect cup of coffee in the morning. That’s why we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of our favourite suppliers: The Mexican Coffee Company. The Mexican Coffee Company is a brilliant, family-run business, with a passion for high-quality, ethically sourced coffee. Their beans are grown high in the Chiapas region of southern Mexico, an area known for producing coffee with a smooth, chocolatey richness and delicate fruity notes. It’s a flavour that’s as comforting as it is vibrant – just the thing to start your day off right. What we love most about this company (besides the delicious coffee, of course) is its commitment to doing things correctly. They work directly with coffee-growing communities in Mexico, ensuring that farmers are paid fairly and supported in sustainable growing practices. It’s coffee with a conscience – and it tastes all the better for it. This company is not only ethical but also environmentally aware. They describe their brew as Biocoffee because their farmers study the environment in which they grow the coffee plants to find natural ways to enhance the coffee's quality. Most importantly, from our perspective, the farms are integrated into the existing environment. Many coffee farms are established in areas that have been deforested. However, the Mexican Coffee Company farmers establish their farms within forested areas so there is a symbiotic relationship: the environment changes the coffee, and the coffee enhances the environment. Take a look at some of the photos they sent us of the areas where their coffee is being grown. When we were looking for a coffee supplier for the guest house, we wanted more than just a great brew. We wanted a company whose values aligned with ours: personal, thoughtful, and committed to quality. The Mexican Coffee Company ticked every box. Their beans produce a coffee that’s smooth, rich, and beautifully balanced – strong enough to wake you up, but gentle enough to savour. Each morning, we brew their coffee fresh for our guests, and there’s something so comforting about walking into a breakfast room filled with the scent of freshly brewed coffee. It sets the tone for a relaxing, enjoyable day – whether you’re heading off on a local walk, exploring nearby towns, or attending an event at one of the many venues in Harrogate. At the heart of everything we do is a simple goal: to make our guests feel welcome, comfortable, and cared for. Serving excellent coffee is just one of the ways we do that – but it’s one that makes a big impression. So next time you stay with us, take a moment over your morning cup. Enjoy the flavour, the warmth, and the care that’s gone into every sip – from the Mexican hillsides where the beans are grown to our breakfast table, where we serve it just for you. |
