This novel sees the return of our beloved Poirot when he is engaged in an unusual case. Carla Lemarchant was the daughter of famous painter Amyas Crale who was poisoned ostensibly buy her mother Caroline. However after her mothers death in prison Carla receives a letter posthumously from her mother declaring her innocence. Therefor Carla asks Poirot to look into the case – is it just a woman trying to make an impression on her daughter or was she really innocent and the murderer is still on the loose.
So could it have been suicide? Or was it the wife after all? Or the Mistress Elsa Greer? Or the two guests Philip & Meredith Blake who seemed to have no motive but did they? Or last but not least the governess Cecilia Williams.
One of the big differences in this book to Agatha Christie’s usual style is that Poirot has been brought in 16 years after the murder and harnesses the aspects of memory, differing witness statements and viewpoints.
