New for 2014 Jake's Harrogate is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt every morning over the Easter weekend from 10am - check out http://www.jakeanthony.co.uk/ for more info!
A good friend of mine is a fan of everything Masham (a village local to my native Harrogate) put me onto this author as primarily an artist who has branched out into illustrated books.
The Penhill Giant is Ian Scott Massie's first foray into Children's literature and we feel with his heartwarming interpretation of the old Yorkshire dales story as well as the relevant and detailed illustrations bring the story to life.
The story I would say is suitable for the 7's and under and would be good for either a parent reading to a small child or as a starter reader for an older child.
The story is set in Sunny Wensleydale here cows seem to go missing periodically and sightings of a giant are terrifying the natives! One day a small girl is caught in the rain and the Giant takes her in - leading to cups of tea, meetings with the locals and the solution of what really happened to the cows! There are also strong themes of waggy dogs, cheese, cake and the importance of good manners.
ISBN 978-1-909260-05-4 and they can be ordered direct from the Masham Gallery
Our journey around the grape-cultivating globe continues. This time we look at the symbiosis of new world terroir and vinification techniques with old world grapes.
As per usual the evening will be the hosted by the inimitable Patrice of Le Bon Vin wine. Tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the door (we can't guarantee there will be tickets left). The evening kicks off at 7pm and lasts until about 9pm. Food is available on the night.

The organisers of the successful Harrogate Christmas Market are delighted to announce that it will return for a third year in 2014 in the same attractive location, St Mary’s Walk at the bottom of Montpellier Hill.
After being given permission by Harrogate Borough Council to go ahead again, Harrogate Christmas Market will take place from Thursday, November 27 to Sunday, November 30.
The Market will be even bigger and better, with a larger Craft & Gift Marquee and wider gangways to accommodate the large crowds, as well as a redesigned layout to improve the overall visitor experience.
Brian Dunsby, who, alongside his wife, Beryl, has led the Organising Committee since the event began in 2012, said he was pleased the Council’s Licensing Committee had shown unanimous support for the Christmas Market.
He said: “The 2013 Christmas Market brought around 40,000 people into Harrogate, including local people and visitors from around the country. Having such an influx of shoppers just a few weeks before Christmas is a real boost to our shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels at a vital time of year. We had many messages of support from them following last year’s Market and several said it was their busiest weekend of the year.”
“It is great to be able to put the Christmas Market on again in 2014, not just as an attraction for local people and visitors, but to give our support to the many businesses and organizations which benefit from it too.”
As Harrogate Christmas Market continues to expand, a new organisation structure has been introduced with specialists in charge of aspects such as health and safety, logistics, trader selection and marketing. However, all these organisers are still volunteers and the event will continue to be run on a not-for-profit basis, with any surplus being donated to local good causes including the annual Christmas lights appeal.
Steve Scarre, who is taking charge of logistics, said: “Brian and Beryl have done an incredible job in establishing and growing Harrogate Christmas Market in just two short years.
“Its reputation is amazing – there were enquiries coming in from people wanting to book stalls for 2014 the day after the 2013 Market closed. However, the way the event has grown means it now involves a significant amount of work to secure bookings, get everything set up and keep things running smoothly throughout the four days. The full support of the Borough Council and County Council is vital.
“The new organisation structure will help to ensure Harrogate Christmas Market is even more successful in 2014 and beyond.”
Bookings are now being taken from local businesses which want a stall at Harrogate Christmas Market this year. The focus is on high quality Yorkshire products, including food and drink, crafts, gifts, decorations and other items not normally found on the High Street.

Baltzersen's joined the independent café scene in September 2012 and has proved popular with both locals and visitors with its Scandinavian inspired menu and décor - walk through the doors and you are greeted by the lush smell of coffee and scrummy pastries.
We went for the tasting evening and I can highly recommend the Venison if that is on the menu for the week you are in Harrogate. The menu will change on a weekly basis so its best to check in for a copy or look on the web site for this week's selection.
I would also mention that Baltzersens is dog friendly during the day which is unusual in Harrogate.

Harrogate Dance Festival Weekend
Sat 17th & Sun 18th May, 2014
Ever watched Strictly Come Dancing and wished you could do that to? well here is your chance with Harrogate Dance Festival 2014.
The Harrogate Dance Festival offers a weekend packed with workshops, master classes and events, celebrating popular dance past and present.
Following the success of last year The Harrogate Dance Festival is back in town and this time it promises to be bigger and better than last year!!
“This is not just an event for the seasoned dancer but for the beginner as well” says Artistic Director and founder James White. “This year we are opening the doors of The Royal Hall all day Saturday and offering FREE dance lessons to everyone who wants to come in. You don’t need a partner, just yourself and some enthusiasm to try”.
For the more experienced dancer we have 6 times UK Dance Champions Richard Still & Morgan Hemphill teaching on Saturday as well as top professional instructors Karen Byron, Andrew Thrower and Amy Pedder.
The Gala Dance Night at Harrogate’s splendid Royal Hall is undoubtedly the highlight of this fantastic festival. It will be more than a show, more than a dance, so expect a whole evening of live music and show dances as well as the opportunity to enjoy dancing in this historic venue.
The UK Dance Champions will be performing excerpts from their live show along side Britain’s Got Talent Semi finalists, AJ & Chloe, who will dazzle us with their fast paced Latin routines. “For this occasion The Royal Hall is returning to its former glory as a premier music and dance venue,” Harrogate’s own professional entertainment and events company, White Diamond Entertainment, will also feature performances, including, amongst others, a Charleston and an Argentine Tango. When Harrogate-based Echo 42 Big Band, with their singers, take to the stage, it will be time for the audience to sit back and enjoy the rich sound of a wide repertoire of live dance music or a chance to dance on the magnificent maple sprung floor of the Grand Hall.
Local based Choir, Rock Up & Sing, will also feature in the performance providing something special to partner our dance professionals.
So, whether you enjoy watching, listening or dancing, this will be a unique and special occasion.
From 7:30pm on Saturday 17th May 2014, the restored Royal Hall will resound to music and the floor of this historic setting will be yours to dance on. Seats are allocated with tickets and the whole floor of the Grand Hall will be available for dancing.
Tickets & full events Programme for The Gala Dance Night are available through Just Add Tickets:
phone on 01423 569817. Further information about all the Harrogate Dance Festival events is available at www.harrogatedancefestival.co.uk .

Owned and run by local artist Josie Beszant, the gallery is a magnet for visitors to the beautiful market town of Masham - which is only a short drive from Harrogate and makes an excellent start to a day in the Dales. This informal and inviting gallery sells work by over 80 artists and craftspeople including Ian Scott Massie, Hester Cox and Janis Goodman. You will find an astounding selection of high quality individual pieces often unavailable anywhere else. Masham Gallery is where you’ll unearth gifts for people who have everything, unusual ceramics, paintings and handmade prints as well as a range of jewellery, toys and gifts. Also offered is a fabulous framing service so you can get everything done under one roof. I would also say that with their focus on finding and nurturing local artists you will truly find something unique when you walk through the door.
Josie and Ian Scott Massie also teach in the fabulous Artison program founded by Gaynor Pearson and Sue Palin who believe art can be something everyone can and should try. This being so Gaynor and Sue had the idea of starting the program giving anyone who feels inspired (no matter their skill level) the opportunity to try anything from Sewing for Beginners to Making Willow Birds - for the full program of classes and times see - http://artison.co.uk/?page_id=5978 - There is also a range of skill levels so please read carefully before booking.
A day at ArtisOn is an experience – “you time” where you take home more than simply what you’ve created. Treat yourself or come with friends, meet people with similar interests, be inspired! Wonderful homemade lunches are also provided as well as great tea, coffee and cakes so that your creativity will also be well fed! If you can muster a group they can schedule a date to suit you, tailor the workshop to your group and offer you a discount too.
